Well Water

What a girl called "the dailiness of life"
(Adding an errand to your errand. Saying,
"Since you're up . . ." Making you a means to

Pumped from an old well at the bottom of the world.
The pump you pump the water from is rusty
And hard to move and absurd, a squirrel-wheel
A sick squirrel turns slowly, through the sunny
Inexorable hours. And yet sometimes
The wheel turns of its own weight, the rusty
Pump pumps over your sweating face the clear
Water, cold, so cold! you cup your hands
And gulp from them the dailiness of life.

[Now it is time that gods came walking out]

A three month ritualistic performance that concluded with a series of photographs and videos. Done in two phases: first, a private ritual phase of masticating paper and documenting the process; next, an observational period of documenting the ritual oblations as they alter with time while stored in sealed glass jars. The project title, [Now it is time that gods came walking out], is taken from an untitled poem by Rainer Maria Rilke and deliberately links the work to the idea of religious, but ultimately personal, rituals. The Records, I
An introspective project incorporating thousands of photographs, which can be interpreted individually or as one massive group. The work is organic in that the entire thing changes with each new photograph (or, record). In time it will be shown in an interactive format. Began in 2003

The North Hills
A ritualistic-based project derived from weekly walks at the North Hills in Missoula, Montana, USA. The two year practice of walking in this place yielded an extensive collection of photographs of the ground - plants, dirt, burrows, twigs and so on. A selection were treated as sculptural objects, mounted on wood and displayed on the floor or creeping up walls for two separate installations in NYC. 2004 - 2006

Shayna was born in Chapel Hill, Tennessee. She currently lives and works in Amsterdam, the Netherlands with her partner, poet Megan M. Garr. A deeply — though now distant — religious background, with roots in Evangelical Christian America, forms the basis for her ontological investigations into desire and melancholy. Operating primarily on intuition, she is curious about the potential to imbue the physical world with ourselves, and vice versa. Through ritualistic practices, she seeks to record (or capture) the intersection between observable and spiritual reality using photographs, sculptures, drawings, video and performance. Ritual is employed as a route to repetition, and the manic or absurd pathology that comes with such exaggeration. Memory plays a crucial role in her process, as does nuance and ambiguity. Themes in recent performance and video works include ‘the absurd’ (as related to religious rituals), 'the sacred' and (the illusion of) privacy.

Shayna received a B.A. in Art from Houghton Wesleyan College in 2003. Her work has been exhibited in the USA and UK, and is part of several private collections. In addition to her work as an artist, she is an instructor for the Interactive/Media/Design department at the Royal Academy of Art in the Hague and is the art editor for Versal, Amsterdam's only international art and literary journal, and designs projects for Reckoning, a new after-school program in Amsterdam.
